Building the Virginian?
Author: RRBMail

Sometime back about 2012 Model Railroader ran a series of articles about modeling the Virginian Ry. on a 4'X8' table. Does anyone know if the complete series was ever placed a DVD and/or what Model Railroader issues comprised the entire monthly series? I'm thinking of converting the VRy. layout design to represent the Rio Grande at Helper UT. Thanks in advance!

No DVD's to my knowledge, but you can get all of the magazines offline. This is one 4x8 that I actually enjoy myself!

While I was in northern England, I visited Jon Grants basement and seemed to recall he had a small Virginian layout that he told me was featured in MR magazine.  I wonder if it's the same layout?

The entire video series is available on the Trains.com website. That's the good news.

The bad news is that you must have a paid subscription to access it.

Acouple of videos about this model railroad are available on the "u tub" web site.

Kalmbach has been known to sell the project layouts after they've been on the train show circuit for a couple of years after they were built.
So it is quite possible.

I'm happy to buy a Train.com subscription; does an yone know the
stock number for The Virginian DVD?

Klambake HQ just told me that The Virginian project layout was never on a DVD for sale. Only the various Model Railroader 2012 issues were produced starting with January 2012. But as of the EOB today MR staff did not know what issues carried the various steps in the project. Walters did place a short infomercial about that project railroad on You Tube because their building were used. So anyone have the 2012 volume and can share in what issues carried the various episodes?

There is not a DVD, but there is a series of videos that one can view if one pays for the trains.com access.  The Virginian layout, and a companion series on the "Thin Branch", which was an extension to the original are well-done videos, IMHO.  They were made for the MR Video Plus.  MRVP was a valuable video system but somebody in the Kalmbach corporate structure has ruined it.  If you do subscribe, go to "videos",  Look under "modeling". then "layout builds".

Great idea, love the redesign to be Helper. That was a great 4x8 design, maybe one of their best.

Since I subscribe online, I went to 2012 MR and it appears that all five parts were January to May 2012.
