Multiscale Digital RIP ...
Author: Jeff_Johnston

Well darn, I just learned that Multiscale Digital, the manufacturer of the 3D printed Willamette electric donkeys (and many other model RR pieces) sold by Shapeways,, has shut down its company and been dissolved as of February 12 this year. The company spokesman is looking at selling the IP but that's a project yet to come.

Quite a loss for the hobby, but perhaps another 3D player is stepping in.

I just rooted around the Shapeways website. I put a part in my shopping cart and started the checkout process. I didn't finish, but all seems normal.

My mistake, it was Multiscale Digital, one of the Shapeways suppliers, that shut down.

May want to edit your post to reflect that.  It's one thing for an indivual entity to close up shop on Shapeways, but a whole another thing for Shapeways itself to call it quits.

With new players on the 3D scene, notably 3D Central, there are alternatives.

So, this is an odd one.  Multiscale originally printed at home and sold their items direct through their ebay store.  Then then closed their store and moved everything to Shapeways: A rather odd move to say the least in this era, and needless to say, the prices quadrupled.  Lost all my business right there.  But, the kicker...

When they moved to shapeways, they were using product photos of their items that were printed on whatever resin printer they had at home, be it a Saturn or whatever.  It was nowhere near the quality that you would have gotten had you ordered and recieved the thing through shapeways.  Kind of a bait and switch to be honost.

They had some really cool stuff, hope to see it continue.
