That might be a Rio Grande ICC caboose built in 1975.  They had a funky filter contraption on the side.  They were announced last year.

Yes, that is the new Rio Grande EV caboose due out this year.  The funny box was a vent that from what I have heard, wasn't very effective.  These cabooses were in the 01515 to I think 01524 numbers and were delivered in the solid Aspen Gold Action Road paint scheme.

There may have been samples of the 01400 series also coming from Athearn.

Isn't it Rapido doing the 01400 series riveted shop built cabooses.

Athearns are the ICC 01500-01514 steel welded offset wide-vision cupola cabooses built in the mid 60's and the 01515-0124 steel welded centered wide-vision cuploa cabooses built in the mid-1970's.  The 60's built EV cabooses will only be offered in the silver single strip grand gold scheme, although they were repainted later in solid orange, which Athearn isn't offering in this run.

I have a couple of the 60's EV cabooses by Overland I'm planning to get painted solid orange to fill that gap left by Athearn.

Cheers,
Jim

Jim you second link literally goes to the solid orange painted one and it mentions
the experiment Air thing. So not sure what you are saying. But thanks all for the help and Ideas.  I had some overly wild ones of my own  lol

There are two different cabooses.  The 1966 caboose has a different cupola than the 1976 caboose.  The 66 cuploa was offset and the 1976 cupuloa was centered.  Different window arrangement too.

What I am saying is the 1966 caboose was first painted in the silver/grand gold single strip version and in the 1970's it was repainted in solid orange.  Athearn isn't offering the 66 built caboose in the re-pained version as announced.  Maybe later?  Am I wrong?

Cheers,
Jim

Why would you ruin such nice cabooses by painting them both in solid orange???  Me, I am just disappointed in no 01510.  Funny story of the real 01510.  She sat in Pueblo at the museum even tho privately owned.  I learned too late that she was sold to someone back east, and she was soon gone.  Then I learned who had owned her, my high school chemistry teacher!  Oh if I had only known sooner!  Drat.

Since I am modeling the 1970's and some/all? of the 1966 EV cabooses were painted solid orange, I want to have mix representing what was run.  But I agree, the silver/grand gold single stripe is a very nice paint scheme.  That's a wild story about 01510!

Cheers,
Jim
