Latest Athearn News Letter
Author: M-636

I just received the latest newsletter from Athearn, and I am trying to figure out exactly how many GE Gas Turbine locomotives the C&O owned and how many GP49s the Grande owned. I can not find any prototype information or photos anywhere!

Oh my God, its like, Lionel Lines, or Live Steam-itis.     But look at the bright side;   The suckers that buy incorrect stuff help defray the costs of the diework and make more new stuff possible so we actual model railroaders can get stuff we never could have had in the past.    Like SD45X's, and U28CG's.

LEGENDARY LIVERIES

What are Legendary Liveries? An Athearn exclusive, they are the ultimate answer to “What if?” Featuring some of the most popular railroad paint schemes of all time, these models are perfect for collecting, proto- freelancing, or just plain fun! Whether company proposed paint schemes, canceled locomotive orders, or alternate takes on history, Legendary Liveries are fun and unique additions to any roster. Enjoy these items, and answer the ultimate railroad question of: “What if?”

I won’t buy one. I’ve got enough prototype builds to keep me busy for a REALLY long time.

Bowser did sort of  did fantasy schemes for the C430.  RI ordered them and canceled the order.  Bowser did these.  Alco proposed them to the LV.  They did these as well.  PC ordered and canceled but they already had done PC as they had them via the NYC.

What we used to call foobies.  Some like but it's not for me.

Exactly, what happened to "Model Railroading is Fun"? And people who complain how it ain't prototypical also have lots of other stuff on their layouts that isn't exactly correct, like wildly fake water, scenery that looks like it came straight outta an old Star Trek episode, made up road names for their personal layout, modern layouts with 20-30 car unit trains, etc. The list is endless, but should be beside the point like going to the movies (suspend disbelief they call it)...

It's not even a "foobie" anymore when they tell you STRAIGHT UP that it's a "What if".
Until they get zero pre-orders, they're going to keep making them.  Think about it - they'd call it off if nobody pre-ordered any.

Took a look, gotta admit, the Black Widow paint scheme looks nice on a turbine, not my scale but fun to look at.

You had me with the Star Trek line. :-). Truth is we all get to draw our own lines in the sand. As long as the "what if "products are well marked as such, I see no problem with them. For instance, I choose to ignore graffiti. You won't see it on my layout. That's not necessarily prototypical by any stretch, but there it is.

We've got Legendary Liveries  whatever different manufacturers call them on the one hand
And then we have all the
Home Shops  Proto freelance line of freight cars and more on the other WOW

It's really a great time to be building a model raiload empire.
You can have it your way, or follow the proto-type to the last detail.

My bad.  Legendary LIveries or Fantasy Schemes rather than foobies.  Everyone gets it tho.

I like them actually.  I have some Erie Lackawanna U23B's from Atlas.  I also have some SD50's in EL from Athearn.  I would also buy GP38-2's in EL if Athearn Genesis or something similar were offered.
I am looking forward to the SDP45's as EMD demonstrators to go with my SD45X.  I look to model trains as something fun in my life and a way to relax and enjoy.
