Model Railroading > What wire strippers for tiny pre-wired 402 LEDs?Date: 04/15/25 17:21 What wire strippers for tiny pre-wired 402 LEDs? Author: railstiesballast I am very fond of using pre-wired 402 and 603 LEDs for many projects.
However the very fine wire and tough insulation make stripping them to make connections challenging (to me). I have tried to measure the size of the wire with a dail caliper and think the conductor is about 0.006" and over the insulation I think it is 0.01". On line discussion mention using lighter, teeth, and several brands of strippers. Can anyone advise me on a method that works for you? Date: 04/16/25 02:03 Re: What wire strippers for tiny pre-wired 402 LEDs? Author: funnelfan It's tricky with that ultra fine wire. I don't have a real good solution either, but one method I use is the hold the wire against my xacto knife blade with my thumb using a light pressure and pull the wire. Takes some practice so that you don't break the wire.

I took a pair of wire strippers that routinely cut the wire when I attempted to make the cut and pull the isulation off. Then I put a small round "rat tail" file in the notch and gave it a few twrills to cut back the cutting edge. It seems to be able to cut the insulation now without cutting the wire. Thanks for your suggestions. The Xacto knife method works too, sometimes. Date: 04/16/25 10:58 Re: What wire strippers for tiny pre-wired 402 LEDs? Author: PasadenaSub Glad you found a good method. From your description of the wire diameter, it sounds like 34 AWG wire.
If you'd ever like to get a multipurpose stripper, this wire stripper can go that small: https://www.amazon.com/Engineer-PA-14-Stripper-universal-crimping/dp/B001YHELPS railstiesballast Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Now I think I have a method. > I took a pair of wire strippers that routinely cut > the wire when I attempted to make the cut and pull > the isulation off. > Then I put a small round "rat tail" file in the > notch and gave it a few twrills to cut back the > cutting edge. > It seems to be able to cut the insulation now > without cutting the wire. > Thanks for your suggestions. > The Xacto knife method works too, sometimes. I later bought a pair of Klein Tools 11057, which are pretty much the same thing with more comfortable handles. When I have OptiVisors or magnifying glasses on, I find they're much easier to pick up. Functionally I consider them equivalent. Dano Date: 04/17/25 17:08 Re: What wire strippers for tiny pre-wired 402 LEDs? Author: LarryDoyle I've found that carefully biting the wire between a tiny goove in my left front tooth and the tooth below it, then wihdrawing the wire gives me a nice clean cut of the insulation.
Your results may vary. -LD Date: 04/19/25 07:08 Re: What wire strippers for tiny pre-wired 402 LEDs? Author: dragoon expensive, but does the job perfectly: wire stripper
