Model Railroading > Moloco 2nd run of Brainerd Boxcar - NEW schemesDate: 04/25/25 05:00 Moloco 2nd run of Brainerd Boxcar - NEW schemes Author: kangaroose Recently we received our Second run of Brainerd boxcars here is the announcement of it for Trainorders. Note, that this run only garnered the 10% tariff and we have covered some of that price increase as much as we could. I'd also like to stress that Moloco has had a warehouse in the USA for at least ten (10) years now, so your orders come from our fullfilment partners in Nebraska. All schemes available and ready to ship.
One thing we love about this car and the NP were the many unique and different paint schemes. No wonder, since a fleet of 1350 cars were produced over several years at the NP Brainerd shops. Some of the schemes are familiar at first glance, but you'll see when I start describing the schemes you'll spot the differences instantly. We always show the prototype photos of the cars we produce to "check" our work, but also to help modelers to weather their cars. 1) Arch lettering scheme starting in Feb. 1957 - the Arch lettering was thickened and faithfully reporduced on this scheme. - the 5' Monad has been updated to the new NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILWAY, the first one omitted the Railway. 2) N.P. Period scheme (alternative), also from Feb. 1957 - this was the start of the large 8' N.P. lettering, note before the NP shadow scheme therewas the Period scheme --- no shadow and periods after the N and the P - the new "Railway" Monad was also super sized to 8-feet with the stacked "Route of the Vista-Dome ..." slogan - the alternative scheme is a replication of one of the car numbers that received the small NP reporting marks stencilled next to the car number, perhaps this was to conform to an industry standard, as if the LARGE N.P. was not enough for reporting marks. 3) N.P. Period scheme, standard version, Feb. 1957 - basically the same as above without the extra small reporting marks ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 04/25/25 05:14 Re: Moloco 2nd run of Brainerd Boxcar - NEW schemes Author: kangaroose 4) Classic NO slogan scheme, LR 12-67
- this scheme is hard to pin down on how many were repainted this way, so we only produced two car numbers (so far) that were almost identical in graphics layouts and that we could verify - the scheme is what most would consider the "Classic" NP scheme minus the "Route of the Vista-Dome..." slogan - we even replicated the slightly different stencilling, lettering variations and shadow differences that occured on the 8' NP Shadow and the 8' Monad, it's all in the details - the reporting marks and car number are stacked versus in one line, some of these lasted into the late 70s this way 5) Brown-Green scheme, LR 11-69 - this scheme is weirdly named by myself since it shows the graphics layout of the NP Green scheme with the CAPY and DIM data all to the left side, but retained the normal Metallic Brown colour - a small number of these were reapinted this way...a sort of transition to the NP Green scheme to come - again I selected two car numbers from verified prototype photos - there are some very minor graphic differences between them, but they are there! ![]() ![]() Date: 04/25/25 05:30 Re: Moloco 2nd run of Brainerd Boxcar - NEW schemes Author: kangaroose 6) NP Green, LR-1-70
- technically this is not a new scheme but one with a different re-weigh - however, all the lettering is slightly different from our previous run, even with all the many variations they had - this time around I chose two car numbers that were very close to being identical, except for one or two sets of small lettering - there are slight differences in the NP Shadow lettering and the NP Monad has been rotated a few degrees from the previous run 7) BN, TP 6-70 - this is also not a totally new scheme but... - since this has been re-weighed in early months of the new BN merger I thought it was important to add it to the list in this run - unlike the previous run of BN repaints these were no part of the Capital Rebuilding Program (CPR), so just a standard refurb and repaint job - note the lack of a COTS panel and only an ACI label - for all the modelers of the early transition period for BN ![]() ![]() |
