Rapido rolls out SP economy baggage at BAPM
Author: dmaffei

Yesterday at BAPM, Rapido displayed their newest SP passenger car addition. Two versions and incredible under body detailing. The SP Dome cars were on display and mind blowing as well. What a time to be a SP passenger modeler! Thanks for rolling out the baggage car at BAPM guys!

Those are amazing econo baggages. If I were a Espee modeler I'd be mumbling mail train in my sleep.

Very nice (I’d missed this post).
Any word as to when I might expect to see them in my PO Box?
SR

The Domes look fantastic ( I’ll be hanging close to my PO Box come August!)

Didn't Rock Island also have these?

Nice, I could use one as a MOW car in the 1980s

I've been eyeing the brass econo baggage over the last couple years but around $500 pop, but they seem to have largely sold now.  But if Rapido is offering them, I'll be in for one, maybe two.  It would be cool if Rapido did more SP passenger cars.

I preordered a dome, so looking forward to that too.

Cheers.

Beautiful underbody detail, but I fear much of it goes unseen on an operating layout :-(. Just my crummy opinion.LOL

ACF built 50 for the Rock Island in 3 different lots, delivered in 1955 and 1956.  They were very similar to the 1962 Pacific Car and Foundry SP Economy baggage cars.  I have wondered if PC&F didn't purchase the rights to the design from ACF, as by 1962 ACF had wound down passenger car production (even though these Econo bags were more of a box-car style).

Apparently the folks from Rapido visited the Niles Canyon Railway to collect measurements from their 6700 baggage car. The word was the Econo Bag and Caboose were about a year to a year and a half out.

The Golden Gate Railroad Museum has an example with all its steam and air lines (harder and harder to find); Rapido also used a couple hundred images from a shoot and measuring session I did some years back. And Michael Humbert, who developed the CAD, scanned a car in the way North of NorCal. It's so nice to have living examples of these artifacts to work with; even better when they have their original equipment in place!

Rapido is clearly moving passenger cars into the freight car detail territory -- at long last!!
