Rapido had the catbird seat and the table by the front door for Saturday's show. And it was a groaning board of SP delight.

There are other pics of their new R-40-27/28 double-door ice refrigerator cars. I thought I'd train my notorious/noxious closeup eye on one example.

Lord, I realized I've been a fan long enough that I remember when the black box number panels started showing up, and did my first custom lettering with dry transfers and a black patch!

All done for us now, and I couldn't be happier. The research and design that went into these was at the highest levels of expertise, and the models show it. (Yeah. I also like freight cars, go figure.) :-)

Very nice models, but too new for my steam era stuff and too old for my 1985-1995 primary modeling era.

And I was a hugely appreciative observer and modeler -- casual or active -- of PFE "Fruit Blocks" and cars, from the Ice Age behind Fs to R-70s behind 645s, the 1960s to the 1990s... and don't remember these at all!

But I do respect a good model. I wonder if I thought the odd R-40-27 or -28 in a train of older 40-foots was just like the short inside-post single-door Athearn car? Before I knew what was what, I might have seen them and not recognized what I was looking at.

Still icing until the early 70s. After that the shipper had to provide icing service

I remember seeing a train of ice reefers at Cheyenne in the winter of 1971. My first and last visit there.
