Model Railroading > SP 8707 SD40M-2Date: 11/28/25 08:18 SP 8707 SD40M-2 Author: sp8192 SP 8707 is a loco that never existed on the SP roster. I call it an SD40M-2 built from an SD45-2. I’ve always like the beastly look of the 45-2 and this one has been on my mind for a while. I numbered it 8707 as it would have been the next number in the 40m-2 series if the SP would have received more MKM rebuilds. The model was an undecorated Athearn with lots of details added, Scalecoat 2 paint, and many decals from Microscale and others. DCC will be added soon.

Date: 11/28/25 17:25 Re: SP 8707 SD40M-2 Author: sp8234 Looks Awesome & like it was a prototype. I also like the look of a SD45-2 & love the SD40M-2 that have a (SD45 cores) GP40 radiator section.
I always wondered if SD45-2 core were done would they have the radiator fans moved & engine doors changed due to the 3000 HP radiators Love what you did with the 3 Speed Lettering units. How about more pictures of them? Especially if Swift Roadrailers are being pulled by them? Tim Hanesworth Santa Rosa, CA Date: 11/28/25 17:51 Re: SP 8707 SD40M-2 Author: emdsdp45 There is another imposter in the picture. I believe SP never had any SD70M-2. Only SD70M's.
I do like these plausible what ifs. I have SD50's in EL and U23B's. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/28/25 17:56 by emdsdp45. Date: 11/28/25 18:18 Re: SP 8707 SD40M-2 Author: funnelfan SP had lots of SD45-2's, but they all had the "tunnel modification".

Extra points for the ACe. t4p. Date: 11/29/25 03:36 Re: SP 8707 SD40M-2 Author: exhaustED Great-looking trio in pic 2! Will you put a sound decoder in?

I would have LOVED to have seen the SD45-2 in UP colors. A patched SP unit would be a close second. I love it when modelers think outdise the box. (no pun intended)
