Model Railroading > Servo turnout control options?Date: 02/25/26 13:17 Servo turnout control options? Author: milwrdfan I'm just about done deconstructing my current layout, and will be starting design of its replacement soon. With my current layout, I had a combination of DCC-controlled Tortoise and servo controls, with the servos being run via TamValleyDepot singlets and the Tortoises controlled by legacy Team Digitial SRC8 (or SRC16, I don't recall offhand which I have). On my next layout, I'm seriously considering replacing the Tortoise motors and going with all servo turnout machines for the turnouts I'm going to control via DCC. This is both for consistency throughout the whole layout, as well as a much smaller motor footprint that takes up a lot less space underneath the layout. I will be utilizing the singlets for some turnouts (since I already have them on hand), but will be needing more controllers to handle the additional servo needs on this new layout. These will all need both DCC and local push-button control. One aspect of the Tortoises was that they have built-in terminals for frog power or other signalling, which would be an additional cost for most of the servo-control options. I see several options for DCC servo control with local push-button control, so am wondering what the pluses/minuses are for some of these options? Also, let me know if there are other servo control options that I should also investigate.

Author: JUTower I have been using the Walthers switch machines almost exclusively; they are DCC native and work very well. There was a bad batch about 5 years ago but Walthers' Customer Service made good on all of them. I find them easier to work with than Tortoises and easier to install.
