Model Railroading > How to model loading of a cement hopperDate: 04/21/26 14:41 How to model loading of a cement hopper Author: march_hare I have a spot on my layout where I want to model a large cement plant. The scene is at eye level, and I would like to model a cutout view of the loading of the hoppers, beneath the large vertical silos that are common in cement plants.
Ahh, but there's a problem. Despite many years in the mining business, (none of it in the cement business) I have no idea what the actual detailed loading area looks like. Specifically, how does the cement actually get into the narrow hatches on the top of a hopper car? There must be some kind of funnel, or flexible chute, or something, to keep the dusty product moving into the empty car hatches and not into the surrounding atmosphere. Anybody know how it's done? Anybody know if that dust proof coupling was common, say, late 1970s? Date: 04/21/26 21:54 Re: How to model loading of a cement hopper Author: PHall CPR_4000 Wrote:

Most cement hoppers had two compartments and many cars had four round or square hatches per compartment with square hatches being the most common. I know that, but you'd think they'd mention moving the car in order to fully load it. I guess you just repeat the procedure x the number of hatches. |
