Model Railroading > Steam Powered SP Overland Mail Running At CMRS YesterdayDate: 05/06/26 09:00 Steam Powered SP Overland Mail Running At CMRS Yesterday Author: FiveChime Several MR friends have modelled the Southern Pacific Overland Mail as I have as well.
A fellow running yesterday had a steam powered version. These are interesing trains to model because the train handled a great variety of headend cars, most being available in HO scale. However, to get it right, the purchase of detailed, expensive brass cars is necessary. As many have probably discovered, these cars look great, but can present problems to run. Shorts, truck turning problems, and weight issues are common. Yesterday several cars ended up having to be removed from the train for various reasons as it progressed around the layout. One more note regarding this train, Randy Cape and associates though the SP Historical & Technical Society, has just released an updated version of he book about this train. Very well written and full of new photos! I've built one with PA power and about 15-20 cars... yep. Sorting out all those cars so they play well together ain't easy!
