It's a fascinating story. Basically defiant SP shop crews after the merger who repainted these in the closest thing to SP colors they could.

This might be helpful to folks:

The odd lease fleet had the SD40-2M desgination. But I don't see an 8800 series outside of the original SD45's.

SP didn't want or had money to complete the repainting with lettering

No, these were unsanctioned repaints done in Roseville AFTER the UP merger by shop crews that wanted to subtly preserve the spirit of the SP.  Fans deemed these as "Roseville Repaints".
Of course, UP management eventually found out about this and unceremoniously put an end to this practice of touching up former SP units with fresh SP Lark Dark Gray and SP Scarlet.

Cheers,
Harry

well I cannot confirm or deny the so called 'Roseville Repaints', but I did capture the UP patched 8801 at the Proviso Diesel Shop in Melrose Park Illinois on September 2003. As you can see, there was no 'repainting' applied to this unit, unless you include the California tagging the graffiti vandals left behind.

Yes, that's a Roseville Repaint. It is only four years after it got the repaint, but the quality of paint they used was poor, and it has quickly faded.
