Model Railroading > Model Storage

Where do you all store a large collection of model trains without having them degrade over time. My apologies for asking this question in the "Western Railroads Discussion Group" and previous people who replied NEED NOT reply again. Thank you.

Climate controlled storage units do exist. I'm paying nearly $400 a month for a 5'x15' space in NJ. Not worth it, but I'm stuck in FL with no way to empty the unit at the moment. Point is, it ain't cheap. 

Dang, I offered up a humorous reply to OP, and the OP responded with not one, but TWO angry PM's!  There's something you don't see every day.

Note to OP:  When a post ends with " : )) " that tells you it was put forth in fun, or good humor, amongst people with a shared interest in a hobby -- and was certainly not intended in a critical or hostile way.  So the next time you see that, maybe just skip the raging PMs, the name calling, etc.

Now, would someone please tell this man exactly where he can put his trains?  I could suggest a few places, but don't want to risk violating any website policies.

It's possible that the op doesn't understand punctuation based emojis. And a smiley is usually :-) or ;-) .

I have a few open rooms at my house. It would be a great place to store someone else's collection that I'm interested in. Haha.


I would personally would try to keep them climate controlled, which is a great excuse to help your wife clean out the old holiday decorations. Under beds, in closets behind clothes, spare bedrooms have all worked for me. Keep them out of the attic which can get hot.

Unnamed friend of mine had his 'collection' distributed among a locker at his club, basement closet, under the layout and in a few odd corners here and there.  When he went to list it in a database, he moved it all to the one modest closet in the basement  ..... three weeks later, Mrs. Friend opened that door . . . 

I've been putting my cars in long boxes that hold around 12 cars depending on length, and throwing away the individual boxes. That frees up a lot of room. But still I have a small spare bedroom that has a switching layout along one wall with tall shelves full of trains around the rest of the room, but most of the long boxes are under the layout.
