WalthersProto BN SD9 project update
Author: funnelfan

I received the replacement wheelsets from Walthers Tuesday and installed them that night. I found a second gear that was split leaving the axle halves loose. Good thing I bought 6 sets as I have some SP SD9s too. The whole truck assembly is different than the P2K and the parts are not compatible. I lubed the axle bearings and painted the wheel faces while I was at it.
I also received a very helpful photo from Soundtraxx on how to install the current keeper on this Walthers-Tsunami board. But space is at a premium and I've had to make some modifications. I removed the elevated screw mounts for the decoder board from the top of the frame to lower the decoder, and now it rests on electrical tape that is on top of the frame and motor. I also removed the speaker plug and soldered the speaker wires to the board. I need to order a scale sound systems speaker as the stock speaker is weak. Using the plunger on my digital caliper to measure clearances, the current keeper just barely fits inside the available space under the shell with these modifications.
Everything is working great during some test running. I will make the wiring neat as the project moves along. This was just test running the model.

Nice work so far. Soundtraxx current keepers are pretty big. One thing I've done in the past is put them beneath the decoder allowing their bulk to shield the decoder from the frame and motor.
