It's hard to imagine the amount of manual labor employed to move lumber around prior to the widespead use of forklifts and the railcars that were designed for them. Such as 40' boxcars with 6' wide doors being loaded and unloaded one stick at a time. The 1960's saw a revolution in railcar design from the combo-door and all-door boxcars, to the early A-frames built on flatcars to the first centerbeam cars built in 1969.

Tony Koester's family owned a company in Indiana that made caskets from wood. Part of the deal was unloading lumber from boxcars by hand, a very tough job. One day as a kid, Tony was helping out when he pointed out that the box car they were unloading had an end door that made the job much easier, and he helped open it. It was a new discovery for his uncle! He wondered how many cars he could have unloaded easier if he had known that! Victor Baird Posted from Android Edited 2 time(s). Very different setup compared to Lowe’s or Home Depot today. Great modeling.
