Model Railroading > Mike's Layout in Idaho Springs, CO, 30 August 2026Date: 08/30/26 18:44 Mike's Layout in Idaho Springs, CO, 30 August 2026 Author: cozephyr Mike Horner of Idaho Springs, Colorado, opened his layout 30 August 2026. Layout included Denver, South Park & Pacific RR at Alpine Tunnel, CO, narrow gauge operation about 1882.
This 1100 sq. ft. HO n3 layout is a composite of scenes and times from various parts of the Colorado narrow gauge. Scenery is 90% complete. D.S.P.&P. West portal of Alpine Tunnel circa 1882, including the early Alpine facilities extending across the Palisades, and around Sherrod curve to Woodstock (track continues on through a tunnel) to Vance Jct. on the RGS. Rio Grande Southern (RGS): Ridgway town and RR facilities directly to Vance Jct. where the track splits to either Woodstock (DSP&P) or to Ames Tank and over Butterfly trestle, then around Ophir loop, across the high-line to either Matterhorn or Rico. From Matterhorn the track reverses around a loop going to Alpine tunnel. From Rico the track passes through a tunnel (duck under) to the west side of Marshall Pass. 1935-39. Denver & Rio Grande Western: Partial 3rd Division from the lower west side of Marshall Pass (tank 7) to Sargent, then either across a duck under (which will be removed for the convention) through the Tomichi Valley, including Parlin, to Gunnison, or return to Ridgway from Sargent, CO. All major railroad facilities include complete full scale size structures of all major RR buildings and structures that were in existence during RR operations at the given timelines. 1935-39. I like that unique turntable, reminds a bit of the one at the Laws Railroad Museum in California for the old SP narrow gauge "Slim Princess".
