AMTK switcher 565 in Portland (was 795 saga)
Author: F40PHR231

Per previous threads about 795's wanderings around the PNW, I'm pretty sure that is what I saw from the MAX Yellow Line today. It was definitely an Amtrak switcher, but I didn't get a chance to double-check the # due to its placement at the Albina diesel shops in Portland, OR, and due to trees, power poles, etc.

Wonder what 795's doing in Portland... Last time I spotted a P42 there having its wheels changed out because somebody forgot to release the handbrake before towing it to Vancouver so it could go pick up the Empire Builder consist that derailed at Home Valley, WA.

(Update: Turns out due to the photo below, the engine is actually 565.)

P40/P42 and P32acdm do not have a handbrake, only a air release parking brake.

Thanks for the clarification, don't have much interest in those GEs so I assumed it had one. In any event, the wheels did get pretty bad flat spots. Maybe the lack of a hand-brake is what confused the UP crew...

Surprise! It wasn't the 795, but former Seattle Amtrak switcher #565, a SSB1200, that was hanging out at Albina yesterday.

I enlarged the picture I took from MAX yesterday and attached it here. It's lousy, but it shows Phase III stripes and you can read 565 there.

Does anybody know where the 565 is going? Presumably it was to be sold like the other SSB1200's...

Maltby Turn out.

You managed to get the numbers amid the branches, lucky! I quickly assumed it was the 795 because it had come up to the PNW recently, so maybe that one is taking on 565's role? If there was time, could've walked over there to look at that and the Olympic unit up close.

Hey, I'd rather see 595 and 795 as switchers for Amtrak anyday, those Pepsi Cans need to go back on running the long hauls!
