Looks like the approach to Los Angeles. Very familiar scene from coming in on #11 several times. I think that's where they service and wash the LA light rail system.

That's the gold line's yards just north of LAUPT about 3 miles... the train is the northbound Coast Starlight #14 headed AWAY from LAX, and the Los Angeles River is on the left.

Oops, I had the direction turned around. I should have rememberd that the beautiful LA River is on the left when coming in on #11, and on the right when leaving on #14. Was this area vacant before they built this for the Gold Line, or did SP (UP) have something there?

I actually took this shot on the south side of the harbor fwy, there is a walkway next to the fwy you just have to go through the homeless and the urine smell my access was from the street between san fernando & broadway (I forgot the name)

Here is an aerial photo of the area.

Just a little picky, but isn't that actually the Pasadena Freeway. IIRC you are just north of the tunnels on the northbound side of the freeway. As a kid, I always wondered if there was access to that walkway.

Actually, if I recall, the name changes at the interchange with Interstate 5 (or the Golden State Freeway). North of the 5 it is the Pasadena Freeway, south of the 5 it is the Harbor Freeway. It also changes from an interstate to a state route.

Been a long time since I lived in and/or drove the area, so I'm sure you're accurate. That probably all took place when they reumbered the two freeways and made the part from I-5 south an interstate and the old Pasadena Freeway a state route with the same 110 number.

Back to the original question, probably not. The Amtrak power was designed by GE. At the time they cited their partnership with Siemens in influencing the design, likening it to the German ICE power cars. I've never seen the resemblence though. I believe the Gold line cars are built by Breda in Italy. Like other light rail vehicles, they have a large window for the operator to get a good view of whats immediately ahead, while the Amtrak diesels have two small windows, likely to allow maximum collision protection in the unit's nose.
