Amtrak #3 on the ground at West Fort Madison
Author: HoggerMatt

Initial reports from another poster that Amtrak #3 is derailed in the control point at West Fort Madison, IA. He says lead locomotive is leaning at a 45 degree angle, the second locomotive is upright and it looks like the baggage car may be sideways. He says the train was coming off the siding at the Fort and crossing over all the way to Main track 2.

More details to follow I would imagine.

Amtrak 3 had engines 170 and 159 and 9 cars total. As stated train was crossing over from the siding to Main 2 at West Fort Madison. Dispatcher was intending to put Amtrak around the Z WSPALT at I assume Argyle, IA or Medill, MO but unfortunately that didn't happen.

I believe everyone was OK on the train, I was down in Fort Madison when this happened and I never heard any reports of injuries.

I boarded #3 at Fort Madison on Wed June 6, for LA. Had the same two engines, 170,159. Must have turned back to CHI on #4 on June 8? I had been in Minnesota on the Milwaukee 261 trip to Duluth on June 2-3.

Amtrak Train Derails in Ft. Madison

FT. MADISON, IA -- An Amtrak passenger train derailed in Ft. Madison yesterday
evening.

Emergency crews as well as workers from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe
Railroad were on the scene of the accident. It happened in the rail yards just
one mile West of the Amtrak Station in the city.

There were early reports of a fuel leak in the area... and passengers were kept
on the train until it was safe to move them.

There are no reported injuries at this time... and no word on what made the
train derail in the first place.

We will continue to follow the story and will bring you more as it develops.

The BNSF 5012 west just received from the Dispatcher a verbal Form A to proceed on Main 2 from MP 236.1-236.4 with a speed of 10 mph. She also mentioned getting Main 1 back in about 40 minutes and that was about 0350 hours.

Nice job on gettin' it cleared up in a good and timely manner, and all I can say is so much for a good run, heard it was vandals that put stuff on the tracks that caused 3 to go on the ground!
