Night time on the City of New Orleans
Author: Nictd1000

Here's a couple of my shots of the Southbound City of New Orleans at Homewood, IL on August 9, 2008.

Oh, it's halfway home and we'll be there by morning, from the Mississippi River rolling out to the sea...

Through the Mississippi darkness
Rolling down to the sea.
And all the towns and people seem
To fade into a bad dream
And the steel rails still ain't heard the news.
The conductor sings his song again,
The passengers will please refrain
This train's got the disappearing railroad blues.

Good night, America, how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle.....
Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor.....

Mr. Guthrie did a great job writing that song......

The song was written by Steve Goodman, but popularized by Arlo Guthrie. Goodman was a Chicagoland resident who used the IC to commute downstate to college in the late '60s.

From what I understand, Goodman wrote it based on a trip(s) on the IC in 69-70. Some changes to make lyrics work.
