Amtrak protection power at Denver, Amtrak 55, dispatched to Plainview, Colorado, about 1:00 PM to be added to Amtrak train 5, the California Zephyr.

#6 ran into trouble as well. It had a patched CNW OLS unit added to the point in Grand Junction, and I believe is now on the way east about 3 hours behind.

It was obviously in trouble out of SLC:

* SLC Departed: 10 minutes late.
* PRO Departed: 32 minutes late.
* HER Departed: 1 hour and 5 minutes late.
* GRI Departed: 1 hour and 8 minutes late.
* GJT Departed: 2 hours and 42 minutes late.

I wonder why they didn't scare up something a lot sooner than GJT!

How is the on-time reliability of #5 these days? I've got a ticket to ride, as the song goes, departing Chicago on Sept. 19, bound for Salt Lake City's 11:50pm arrival there Sept. 20.

Per the Amtrak CZ Route Performance web page the July 2010 OT performance was 22.6 percent and the last 12 months OT performance was 51.4 percent.

If the delays were only east of HER, then I would have suspected a heat restriction.
But the western part sounds like an engine problem, or an engineer wishing to provide
passengers with an extra-smooth ride while still sleeping...
