CDTX 2004 in the Valley
Author: alligatorfan

Got a heads up about this train earlier in the day and was able to catch it a couple of times. These three pics are on the fly as it came out of a slow order going through Halsey. I don't know the names of all the people in photo three, but the guy on the right is "Smokebox" Dave Brown.

These two are at the big curve between Halsey and Alford. Kinda glad I was by myself for this short trip. Thanks to numerous slow driving twits, I missed getting what would have been two prime photos by seconds. My tirade of expletives during the drive back to Eugene is still ringing in my ears!

I got way behind the train and started debating whether I should try and get one last shot or just go home. Feeling robbed of two good photo oppurtunities I just couldn't let the light and what was on the point and rear go to waste, so I leadfooted it out to Natron in plenty of time to catch these last two shots. When the "Gordo" went by all I saw in the open door were boots kicked up on the "guber guard". Hope those guys have some blankets and pillows. I suspect it's going to be a cold ride over the Cascades tonight.

Glad you got some pix. I know what you're saying about people driving slow, the sun's out and people aren't sure what to do. I almost caught this train in Salem, it pulled out as I got out of the car in the parking lot, so I hitailed it to Albany and got there just in time for some quick photos.

That's Gus, Todd, and Dave riding the Gordo.

The Gordo is rigged for HEP as well as steam heat, and so it has heat, light, and has been provisioned with a microwave and refrigerator "borrowed" from the Travellers Rest. They boys will be fine. As long as they bring "My" appliances back. <g>

So... is the car off on a busman's holiday?

I guess that there's a facility/shower/ toilet in that bag?
Riding in a rough bag car doesn't sound like too much fun to me... maybe in an excursion consist, but I'll leave the "tool" car to the die-hard steam guys!

Considering the speeds authorized to pax trains in that area... I'm amazed you had any more than 1! shot at getting it. The slow orders must have really been in your favor.
