When Luck's on Your Side

Stopped by the depot on a cold December night in 2010 with just my camera, and this was the result. This would be Amtrak 703 @ Hanford, CA.

Nice picture! I like the almost ghostly look of the BNSF unit ahead of the more brightly illuminated Amtrak equipment. The Hanford station is a nice place to photograph with the gentle curve through its platform, and the beautifully restored old Santa Fe depot. Thanks for sharing this.

The depot seems best to do for late afternoon and night photography, maybe so early morning shots. Mid-afternoon the high sun makes it challenger to get a good angle for a train going in either direction. Westbound trains are generally the hardest to shoot at that time. if you look to the far right of the picture you'll notice a blur between the nose of the BNSF unit and the edge of the picture as a southbound manifest met the 703 after it stopped.
