AMTK 799 gets help from UP, and more near Ventura, CA..
Author: PasadenaSub

Today's northbound Amtrak Central Coast Surfliner 799 was running over an hour late as I was waiting for the train at Seacliff siding. The big surprise were UP GP40-2's 9986 and 1394 ahead of the P42, 7 cars, and Cascades NPCU 90230. I'm guessing these units were borrowed from UP at Gemco (Van Nuys) and not Oxnard, since the train was already very late when it reached Oxnard.

1-3) Some views of the train alongside Pacific Coast Highway at Seacliff.

4) I wished I had snapped the shutter a moment sooner, to get all the VW microbus into the picture.

5) A new photo location (for me), at the end of Pacific Coast Highway's adjacent running to the railroad - where the road ends and only cyclists can continue north. Just south of La Conchita and a mile or two north of North Seacliff. Amtrak northbound 763 is about 45 minutes late here.

6) Shortly after, Coast Starlight #14 comes through with P42 71 and Cascade F59PHi 466 for power.

7) After a mid-day break, northbound Surfliner 784 shows up at Solimar Beach.

8-9) And my last train before heading home, southbound 769 as seen near the old SP location of Dulah along PCH, about a mile north of Emma Wood State Beach.

are the vehicles in the first photo pulled off to the side of the road to observe the train or parked there for beach activities ... nice photos

10-11) Stops for 769 at Ventura and Oxnard allowed me to easily overtake him and get another opportunity at Camarillo.

Thanks for the views,

Rich

Mostly surfers - the Pacific Ocean is just out of the frame to the right.

The UP engines are the Guadalupe Local power. Thursday morning, #774 died at Surf and they took the UP power from Guadalupe to move the train south. This move is simply returning the power to the location it was borrowed from on the Santa Barbara Sub.

Nice shots.

UP 9986 leading should be former Western Pacific 3554, built 1980.

WP GP40-2 in passenger service on the Coast Line. Whoda thunk it?

There you go, Rich... you did get some UP action (sort of).

Nice shots... I had planned on shooting the 799 at Chats Rocks... having no idea it would be powered by UP Geeps... but woke up a little late and thought I could just get it next week... right! D'oh.
