Passenger Trains > NJ Transit Dual Mode finally reached NY City

This past weekend, several of NJ Transit's Midtown Direct trains were powered by ALP-45D locomotives to/from Penn Station, NY. This was the first occasion for a dual mode to enter
NY City. The occasion was that NJ Transit was doing some catenary work on the Morristown Line
and needed power that could run in diesel mode over the former DL&W and electric on the NEC.
Don't look for this to be a regular occurrence - Penn Station does not have the capacity for
additional trains. The dual modes were originally ordered when NJT thought they would be used
for the "Access to the Region's Core" tunnel that Gov. Christie vetoed.

If you lived in NJ you would have vetoed the tunnels that would have deadended in North Penn Station dba as Macy's basement.

The dual modes have been approved at 90 mph anywhere on the NEC by Amtrak for at least 6 months. If they haven't been used until now, look at NJT, not Amtrak.

I thought NJT's long-term plan was to get to NYC's Penn...
