Passenger Trains > consist of #49 on 9/11

I happened to drive by the Hammond-Whiting station yesterday at about 1:15 pm, only to see a rather late #49 heading into Chicago. It had a strange consist, with a very filthy baggage car on the head end. There was also a baggage car at the end of the train. It looked like there were some cars that were being ferried somewhere.

Anyone know what was going on? I didn't get a good look at the consist, as I was not expecting a passenger train at the time, and the train and I arrived about the same time.

There are usually two baggage cars on this train. One comes/goes from NY Penn, the other on the Boston section.

Other than the Auto-train #49 & 48 are the two longest trains in regular service.

Thanks for the replies. I had forgotten that there was also a section from Boston, which explains the arrangement of the cars in the consist.

Even though I live nearby, I don't think I've seen this train that often, partly because one never knows how late it is going to be, and partly because of my schedule.

Incorrect! Auto Train is longest for obvious reasons...but the Lake Shore Limited is regularly 13 cars and 2 locos making it longer than the Builder and Starlight.
