Now that Joe Boardman has exited?

TrainOrders myth has long believed spies reported back to Mr Boardman. Post something and he will know. The all powerful OZ. Certainly not about the small number of awful OBS people. They're still around. Or the diners that open and shut based on the staff's whim.

As a corporate guy, Mr Moorman likely wants reports, metrics, comps, etc He will likely get a daily tally sheet on operations, and weekly metrics about sales or cash flow.

What will the TO lurkers do now?

Of note: a known major conduit into the inner echelon for bad-news information that got out to Trainorders no longer has his "audience."

But it wasn't so much that this presented a way toward correction of the problem, so much as a way to try and track down the "leak."

So what's wrong with having a "lurker"?  Wick Moorman is a lot smarter than I am, but even I can distinguish between postings that point out an actual service discrepancy or put forward a genuine idea from those that either just report x-number of trains are late (you think he doesn't have that information already?) or are just posting to feel important.  Someone in Wick Moorman's position can't be expected to follow every source of information about his company himself, but why should he deny himself access to useful information?  So I hope there is someone on staff at Amtrak that scans T.O every day, separates the wheat from the chaff, and incorporates the useful stuff into the morning clippings that I assume Wick Moorman, like every CEO, gets.  The issue is not whether someone from Amtrak is monitoring (lurking) Train Orders, but rather what the recipient does with the information.  Wick Moorman is not Joe Boardman.

You could only hope...  It is--and this will be in my book someday--the "Post Office" on rails.  Functions about the same... gov't entity that delivers (eventually) and costs tons of money to operate with a largely demoralized--sometimes indifferent--staff who operates it against all odds while dealing with a cadre of dysfunctional managers and other obstructionists.  To anyone who would like to challenge this statement, I think that you cannot deny its validity--esp coming from an employee with over 30 years of experience to back it up-- but it's a free country, so go ahead.  

Funny thing, one of NRPC's creators and biggest proponents from its onset , Attorney Anthony Haswell from Chicago, has little to say or do with NRPC, anymore.  His noticeable lack of involvement speaks volumes on the assessment of its failure, overall.   Somehow, it keeps going and going...  I wish you luck, Wick!  You will need plenty of it and might benefit more from your wife's insistence that your tenure here be brief!  Trust your better half, here, Southern gentleman!

so true ... lived it for 38 years ... i made just as much if not more money from inefficiency from poor and/or lack of decision making then i did under prepared and structured job duties ...

"Go ahead, make my day!" :-) I'll mention two names from the past, one familiar, one maybe not-so-familiar to TO members:

W. Graham Claytor, Jr. and Marvin T. Runyon.

The second name is mentioned as a response to your comment about Amtrak being "Post Office on Rails." Both leaders have something interesting in common, that they tended to ignore managers, but instead tried to connect with the agency craft employees. Maybe they refused to swim in the swamps they didn't create? :-)

I've mentioned Runyon in the past, in case people ONLY want to use the TO search engine. Unfortunately, I agree with you that "cutting your losses" is a better strategy at this point, instead of trying to fix problems that can't be fixed, so I have strong doubts that men of that caliber can achieve results, or even be found in the bigger swamp we're swimming in today.... Agency Implosion (massive organizational failure) might be the only answer, where swamp monsters have no choice but be held accountable in the court of public opinion.
