Canadian National runs their trains first, OTP 36.3 % worst for short haul trains and ridership is declining.

#392 1:00 late into Chicago, left Carbondale on time
#393 1:13 late into Carbondale left Chicago 12 minutes late

It seems as though a schedule modification is necessary.
If the trains are consistently late that is the defacto schedule.
Why mislead the passengers as to arrival time.

As I understand it, Amtrak is sueing CN over these prolems.  Sure do not want to change schedules while a lawsuit is in progress.

Schedule is already to long, a longer one, would have others on this board bitching.

As to the daily post on the trains.  Chief, everyone on this board has the ability to check the times several ways.  Why continue a daily posting.  Your point has been made and Amtrak is long aware.

If a unusal delay, wash out, derailment etc happens, then sure postings can be a big help to everyone.

As with the Canadian, you negotiate a stretched running time, they will take it all, and they delay it even more.

If the train cannot consistently make its schedule the schedule should be changed
to reflect reality.   How does it serve the customer to give them a false schedule.
That turns a trip that might not have had any negatives from the passengers point of
view into a trip that was an hour late.  

Since Chief is very descriptive of his subject matter it seems that those of you who
don't want to see it can easily avoid it.  Or do we need to save the 1's and 0's for more
pictures of a Dash-something unit pulling a non-descript stack train around some non-descript curve
in the mountains or moonscape desert?

From the responses it seems that the timekeeping is an ongoing issue that should not be
ignored by supposed Amtrak supporters.  Kudos to Chief for keeping the burr under the saddle.

If Amtrak adds two hours to a schedule it already considers reasonable, that would seem to undermine the legal complaint.  The train is now "on time". 

At least until CN starts adding time to the overall trip, again.


(It may be in Amtrak's interest to demonstate and prove the consistent delays. And get a directive from DOT to CN to resolve the matter.)

If the trains are consistently one hour late why would two hours
be added to the schedule?

A complaint that has been going on for years with no resolution.
As I had shown in another post on this matter the schedule in no way
could be considered reasonable because the schedule time is the same
as it was when the double track and 90 mph speed limit were in place.
Amtrak drank the IC Kool-Aide when the line was single tracked.

In the interest of providing accurate information to customers
the schedule should reflect the actual running time.

Expedia offers me an "on time" percentage for many flight segments when considering an air trip. Maybe Amtrak should leave the schedule as is, but note there's a 30% on time historical record for this train, with an average delay of 70 minutes or 130 minutes etc at the end point

Well...since they've been running with cafe cars rather than the baggage cars for axle count, maybe they should all be serving booze.

More revenue for Amtrak and nobody will care about the terrible, horrible, no good rotten train handling from the CN. Damn the bad luck!
