Trains in Montreal this morning, including a GP38H-3
Author: Mberry

With the forecast calling for a completely sunny day, lots of snow around after a big snowstorm and the news that AMTK 68 would have a GP38H-3 for power, I headed to the Peel Basin in Montreal before work this morning to shoot part of the morning rush hour.

1-First up was dual mode engine AMT 1367 (Bombadier ALP-45DP) pushing AMT 809 (the last inbound train in the morning from Mont-St-Hilaire on Montreal's South Shore) past Wellington Tower and towards Central Station.

2-Next was VIA 22 backing up from Central Station with VIA 6410 pushing. This train originates in suburban Ottawa (Fallowfield), goes into Montreal's Central Station and then backs out before heading to Quebec City.

3-The next train was VIA 63 with VIA 920 leading seven stainless steel cars.

4-GP38H-3 AMTK 520 is pushing the deadheading Adirondack towards Central Station 80 minutes before departure. This may be the first time one of these units has been the sole power on a medium-distance train such as the Adirondack. It certainly made a nice change from the usual Genesis Series power.

5&6-The final train I shot was the combined VIA 605/607 for northern Quebec. At Hervey Jct this train will split, with the lead F40 and two cars going to Jonquière and the other half going to Senneterre.

Beautiful shots Michael, do you know if Via used to use RDCs on the 605/607 run? Seems like they would be suited well for that. How the train splits reminds me of how BCR's Cariboo Dayliner / Cariboo Prospector used to split at Lillooet BC.

In its early days, Via used RDCs on the CPR north shore route, Montreal-Quebec, but not this run.

It was locomotive-hauled through the Mt Royal tunnel until that line was rebuilt in the 1990s. Until a few years ago, both locomotives were always at the front of the train.

By the way, the train number pair 605/607 is recent, due to a schedule change on Fridays only. 601/603 was the number pair for all of these northbound services, but now just Monday and Wednesday.
