8(17) 40+ hours late
Author: GenePoon

10 hours 52 minutes late departing Seattle.

It sat in Spokane awaiting clear track from the rockslide
east of Libby.

34 hours late out of Spokane.

The train must have felt like a prison by the time it
got moving.

Anyone who replies, "More time on the train for the
same money" can go sit in the corner.

Would over 40 Hours late be the very LATEST train in all of Amtrak company history ????
I remember an eastbound Amtrak Sunset Limited train that was some 35 hours late in Texas sometime between year 2000 and 2010 I think.
I can NOT remember any passenger train that was 40 of more hours late--ever.
I believe this train -Amtrak train 8 of the 17th has that add and very dubious title on march 20, 2017 (monday) as I write thiss.

I remember that Sunset...among others, was tracking its sad journey!

This one's got it beat.  No way to make up that much time by Chicago.

So what is the point of all this? How would the OP solve the problem?

The OP is simply sharing thr information.  He is not an employee of Amtrak, so it is not his job to solve this problem.

Sunset Limited has record at 2 Full days late in 1999 or early 2000 when Union Pacific took over SP Railroad, when UP had they melt down.

Let's see, there are now 3 #8's enroute.  Every one of them is late with the 39+ hour late one taking the cake.  8(19) is creeping up on 7 hours late and is in eastern Montana.  Today's 8 (out of Everett because of landslides south of Everett) is about 1 1/2 down.  Are there really any passengers on 8(17)?  Perhaps they just let it go in order to get the train sets back in position.

That why my family ever travel in coaches on any LD trains, always sleeping cars.

Situations like this are nobody's fault. They happen. Amtrak has some very able people that take over during these events and do the best they can under difficult circumstances to accommodate passengers, crew, and move equipment. How they manage things is kind of amazing I think.

Can you only imagine the smell in the toilets, lack of normal food, etc. Anyone who considers taking the Builder in Winter (or now early Spring) should seriously think twice about transportation alternatives.

Scheduled to arrive Sunday afternoon, it finally got into Chicago this morning (Tuesday) at about 6:30. This delay required serving two extra dinners, and one extra breakfast and lunch. I wonder how they pulled that off?

7(19) had a fine run all the way to East Glacier. A grain train ahead of it went into emergency west of there.

How about a hand for the railroaders who went into the freezing alpine darkness, walked their serpentine train, and efficiently found/fixed an offending air hose? Yes, it did push back time keeping, but things happen out there and lots of hardworking people -- not loafing in their armchairs -- are doing their best to keep things moving. We'll be 2 hours late into Portland. Nobody is griping or wringing their hands.

Just another perspective from the Hi Line this week...

Ouch!

As a side note, my Grandmother was on one of the Silver Meteors back in the early 2000's that was 27 hours late into NYP. In fact, the train from the next day passed them and arrived at NYP 2 hours late!
