What has happened to cause all this disruption with the Coast Starlight?

UP freight derailment near Sims, south of Dunsmuir. It occurred on a bridge, which was damaged. For some reason Amtrak is not able to provide alternate transportation, such as a bus bridge. Or they aren't trying.

I wonder if Amtrak is using this event as an excuse to save money and put
the entire Coast Starlight train in hiatus - hibernation until the entire route is open ????
A Huge travel tragedy for folks who want to travel the CA coast route SAC to LAX.
Amtrak needs to at least run a FULL stub route from SAC to LAX --coast line - for us in California to use for the duration.

It sure LOOKS like it is, beginning April 28.

Hmm, it is pretty doggone easy to see that amtrak.com allows LAX to SNS on Train 14 for next week. But if true, I agree the wording above could be written more clearly.

Get real. The train cannot operate until the bridge is repaired or replaced. There is no Grand Conspiracy. The Coast Starlight is a popular train and non operation affects revenue.

See if Amtrak was really real, they would detour the Starlight through the Burlington Northern Santa Fe "Highland" between the Keddie Wye and Klamath Falls provided that ex Western Pacific / Great Northern route can accommodate Superliners.

The BNSF detour is not necessarily practical. Detouring UP trains have priority. The route is not high capacity. Crews could be short. Not to mention a lot of added time for 11-14 to take the long route.

Amtrak knows what to do. They do the best they can.

BTW, how many decades has the Great Northern been gone?

From what I hear there will be a stub train operating daily between Los Angeles and Sacramento on the Starlight's schedule.

UP says the route will be out of service for up to 30 days.

A source says that a stub Starlight will operate between Los Angeles and
Sacramento, with one each, beginning tomorrow: Baggage, Sleeper, Diner,
Business Class, Lounge and Coach behind the power.

Starlight On Board Service crews will lose their regular job assignments
but will not be furloughed; they will be on the extra board while the
through service is out. They will not be able to exercise seniority
and bump less-senior employees. The stub Starlight will be staffed
off the extra board.

Another thing Amtrak could do, is route some of the Midwest-Seattle traffic to Chicago and negotiate with some hotel for a decent rate to house people overnight for #7/27 the next day.

Cannot understand why they cannot do a bus bridge between Dunsmuir and Redding. Its only an hour.

In 30 years in the airline biz, we never told a passenger that "there was no alternative transportation.

The fact that Amtrak does this, tells me that they do not take their service seriously.

Yes, I know all about crew availability, servicing, etc. Long story short, If u are a serious transportation company,
there are no excuses. U get it done. period. We always did. Buses, hotel rooms, transportation on our competitors...
It was the cost of taking care of your passengers, and having a good reputation. Obviously, Amtk cares about neither, imho.
Its pathetic.

Maybe there isn't a place to turn the train around.
And to service the Train. I'm just guessing here.
