Passenger Trains > Dumping NYC subway cars into the ocean

This topic may or may not have been covered already, but I thought y'all might find it interesting. Three years ago NYC dumped quite a few retired and stripped subway cars into the Atlantic Ocean. This was done to promote coral growth to jump start an eco system that had been diminishing due to pollution and coral getting killed off. A simple google search will pull up some impressive underwater shots of the cars today.

Artificial reefs are not necessarily "coral" reefs, but they do attract fish, crustaceans, and underwater plant life by providing sheltered spaces for them to hide and grow in.

Several reefs have become major fishing and diving destinations off the NJ coast.

Yes. There was a lot of material scrapped or removed from the cars for EPA reasons before the shells were dumped

That was more like 15 years ago.
