GOOD for the NTSB....now the family should be sued

The NTSB report is a good example of what TAW and others have described as chains of failure. Several items, each minor on their own, combine to kill several people. Mrs Brody started the chain.

The criticism of a anchoring the third rail is surprising. They've been used since 1910 or so..

So the technology design and engineering of a bridge built in 1910 is perfectly good for a new bridge being built today?

Yes, why not? Or are you a bridge engineering expert today?

Not an expert, but I know enough to understand that advances in engineering, metallurgy and chemistry can allow a better bridge to be built today, longer, higher, stronger, etc, that 100 years ago.

Yes and no. There are a lot of rail bridges from that period (and even earlier) that remain in use today with minimal maintenance. On the other hand, most major concrete structures from the 1950s-1960s are falling apart and are having to be replaced.

The chain of events started with the accident on the Parkway. The driver was also a victim, possible totally unfamiliar with the road and crossing.

The Taconic State Parkway accident started the chain, unless there were earlier events that precipitated the Taconic accident.

"...An accident on the Taconic State Parkway diverted traffic onto local roads..."

Has nothing to do with bridge technology or dirigible engineering or corn flakes manufacturing either. Metro-North has had many accidents in third rail territory.

None resulted in this amount of carnage. So why would the company rebuild hundreds of crossings for an unprecedented risk?

How-where did bridges get into this story. ?????

A diversion.

I asked a few weeks ago about whether any changes had been implemented at the scene. The integration of the adjacent road signal with the rail warnings was one area of concern

When traffic is heavier than usual off the Taconic, backups across the tracks are common.

My direct specific counter point to your specific point is that just because something has been in use for over a hundred years DOES NOT MEAN that there is not now a better way.

What's all this talk about a bridge? I read the whole article and watched the video and read/saw no mention of a bridge?

3rd rail is what it is. The only thing they could do to it there is perhaps cut it back a few feet from either side of the grade crossing and then perhaps weld it for a few hundred feet beyond either way.

An identical wreck happened right there about 35 years ago with a smaller auto and a Budd M-1 MU. There was no fire.

With this wreck, the car's engine block got stuck between the rails and an inferno ensued. Let's be glad this did not happen 16 minutes later. That would have been a Wassaic train, lead by a P32DM loco with many hundreds of gallons of fuel.

I knew similar third rail collisions have happened, thanks for the specific confirm.

Metro-North has a lot of capital needs, rebuilding the third rail at every grade crossing would probably not high on their list.

Maybe the cause was the police department not being prepared to instantly push or pull with cables, all the damaged vehicles off the Parkway and let the traffic flow, and make diversion or detour a rare event. Who cars or need any investigation of the auto accident, as it proves of little value. What highway changes result from those fender bender accidents? Just like the CSX accident in Washington, DC when the police held the passenger on the striking train for 5 hours for their "investigation" is a similar example of police power going to far out of line by shutting down a core route highway only for their benefit of investigation. The woman was a fault account of fowling a railroad crossing when there was no room to quickly cross.

There's still some dispute about whether the "clearing" setting on the traffic signal functioned as intended, too. That would have greened the traffic signal when the rail signal activated.

In the cascade of flaws, the wall of cars prevented Mrs Brody from crossing all the way to. Safety.

To be clear, I'm not defending her. Merely noting that several bad things happened to kill all these people. Starting with Mrs Brody's failure to stop clear of the gate.

Very poor of her lawyer and husband saying she was unfamiliar with the area and supposedly that makes it okay to be a dumba$$ and set on a crossing, get out of the car, wonder if the sky is falling and wind up getting herself and others killed. The fault lies squarely with her. Had nothing to do with the detour, previous wreck, congested road, or the price of corn flakes in Egypt. Years ago someone should have realized she was a few marbles short of common sense. Not unusual, we are producing those at an alarming rate these days. And NONE of them want to get better. They will fight you in order to remain an idiot, and proud of it.
