Passenger Trains > No Sunset Limited for a while?

This seems to come with very little notice, unless I missed something. This service alert goes for the 9th through the 17th for no service west of El Paso.

Hmmm . . . I wonder if UP is, likewise, suspending all freight service between El Paso and Los Angeles?

This is a bunch of B.S.

Route the train up the "Horney Toad" line and onto the BNSF Transcon!

Interesting, i just left el paso going east 3 hours ago. That almost would have fked me...

This should have been announced months in advance so passengers could make appropriate changes to their travel plans.

hmm very sorry about trashed travel plans of passengers.
I wonder how Amtrak Los Angeles yd will have speare equipment for any very ver3 late SW chief trains west train 3???
Usually train 4 gets saved from an otherwise super late trian 3 by Robbing the idle Sunset Limited consist at LAX.
I guess this equipment swap procedure will NOT be possible for the duration of this disruption to the Sunset Limited.

Looks like cancelation west of El Paso is just two days in each direction. Obviously still not good if you were traveling then.

Remember thats what the NS has done for several years between Atlanta and New Orleans. IF NS can do it, so can UP. Who is next ?

The work window must actually start on the 12th, because 2(10) is still running LA to NOL. It would use the trainset from 1(8), so there would be no stranded trainset in LA. There should be enough usable cars in LA to cobble together a set for #4 if needed given that other trains are running with reduced consists and there are always a few spares in LA anyway.

And what if Amtrak had no prior knowledge that UP was going to do this?

Maintenance blitz on the Lordsburg Sub from Tucson to El Paso. Can't bridge the 2 sets between Tucson and El Paso because the only day they run together is Thursday. When you have 300 miles of rail to work on in a week that's actually not bad of a closure. Plus no place to turn the set in Tucson, and El Paso has a designated station siding these days. Overall they're at least running the eastern half, better than it being cancelled altogether.

El Paso - east will see very little ridership. Plus January still sees a few folks wanting to Chicago to Arizona for the winter. Not like it was with the SP operating 3-4 extra sleepers to handle the Snowbird business.

The train was sold out Eastbound last Friday!
If I was Anderson, I would negotiate with UP for a daily LAX to TUS train.

Did this happen when the railroads were running their own passenger service?
