Amtrak P42 fuel numbers

Does anyone have an order of magnitude of a P42's fuel consumed per mile with HEP in use?

A friend informs me... About 1.75 gpm at 80, producing HEP.

That sounds pretty efficient to me. I drove an Army armored personnel carrier that burned four gpm.

Train speed has nothing to do with it. I can be doing 79 at any throttle, including idle. If memory serves me correct, producing HEP in run 7 at 897rpm's I think was 117gal an hour.

In a consumption test done in the 90's a single P40 pulled a 12 car train, making HEP and running up to 110 mph on the NEC. It ran 60 miles and used 114 gallons of fuel.

In another consumption test a unit with an EMD 16-710 engine was metered and found at full throttle, full RPM, and in the short term overload of the alternator was sucking 7 gallons per minute from the tank. Don't know how much of that was going back in the return line though.
