The Yerba Buena brings up the markers on Amtrak 14 at Santa Margarita last Thursday.

Regarding those headlamps at the bottom of the car, on each side of the coupler -

Can the car owner/operator turn them on at night for any reason, or does it require permission from the conductor?

They are called track lights, and can be used at night, but we generally turn them off when meeting or passing trains. They are very useful in seeing problems with trains being met or passed.
