Passenger Trains > Cardinal is now over 2 hours late just trying to get into IndianaDate: 02/20/18 18:48 Cardinal is now over 2 hours late just trying to get into Indiana Author: inCHI I saw that on a status map 50 is at 0mph on the IN/IL state line near Munster and Dyer, and increasingly late. ACTS shows it, and a northbound lined onto the Elsdon Sub. Did 50 just sit for two hours waiting for a CSX freight to come by? I saw some comments that sidings are few and can't fit the monster trains that CSX might be running.

Date: 02/20/18 19:11 Re: Cardinal is now over 2 hours late just trying to get into Ind Author: inCHI And now, 25 minutes after I wrote this, that northbound has finally cleared and 50 has a signal. It will be over 2 hours 30 mins late into Dyer.
Date: 02/20/18 19:28 Re: Cardinal is now over 2 hours late just trying to get into Ind Author: justalurker66 Departed 2:36 late ... interesting to note that Amtrak is predicting "early" arrivals for the end of the run (DC through NYC).
Date: 02/20/18 19:37 Re: Cardinal is now over 2 hours late just trying to get into Ind Author: stuporchief It's just painful. The Hoosier State would be a joke if it wasn't such a ridiculous waste of money that is doing so much damage.
Chicago - Indianapolis should be a hugely successful passenger route (even at 110 mph), serving as a model for others to emulate. Instead, it serves as an easy target for anyone who wants to paint passenger rail as a hopeless idea form the 19th Century. Another notable contribution to the national malaise from the State of Indiana. Date: 02/20/18 20:30 Re: Cardinal is now over 2 hours late just trying to get into Ind Author: inCHI And to add to the misery, even timed I've seem the tracker data, it is only going 40mph. I wonder if it is stuck behind a freight, or that has something to do with pulling the Hoosier State consist.
Date: 02/20/18 21:21 Re: Cardinal is now over 2 hours late just trying to get into Ind Author: SandHouseTalk The first substantial delay was the freight train in emergency (brake). The second will be awaiting track inspection for high water between Dyer and Rensselaer, IN.

Combination of nimbys, soccer moms, chicken pluckers, nay-sayers, wimps and unwanted, unneeded, overzealous regulators have placed services like the Hoosier State squarely behind the eight ball. Uh no, if you want to blame someone, blame Conrail and CSX. Conrail for abandoning the SC&S, thus forcing the Cardinal/HS to take a more circuitous route that travels thru UP's Yard Center and crosses Dolton, one of the country's busiest junctions, and also has to thread its way thru the 80th St interlocking. CSX for limiting top speed to 60 mph and often giving freight movements priority along with providing too few and too short sidings, most of which have spring switches at each end. In fact, the state (to the amazement of many of us) provides a subsidy, as do the communities of Rensselaer, Lafayette, West Lafayette and Crawfordsville, none of which are happy with the present state of affairs. Until the early 1990s, the HS made good time (taking almost an hour less than now), and for awhile, ran seven days a week with the Cardinal running separately on three days. Those were the good old days. Date: 02/21/18 08:38 Re: Cardinal is now over 2 hours late just trying to get into Ind Author: PC1974 Quote: "Those were the good old days."
Yes they were! Flying around the 50 curve at REN on the big train first thing in the morning, after handing off the REN passengers to the little train at IND... Right back to 79 uphill to Airport Rd.. Swing onto the SC&C at the Panhandle coming out at CP 509 smokin' into CHI in 3.5 hrs! Date: 02/21/18 10:08 Re: Cardinal is now over 2 hours late just trying to get into Ind Author: joemvcnj The latest PTJ issues has an article on the Charger locos. It lists Indiana as part of the multi-state consortium obtaining 33 of them. Is that true ?
Date: 02/21/18 11:00 Re: Cardinal is now over 2 hours late just trying to get into Ind Author: inCHI Thanks for the clarification on why it was going to 40mph, and what the service used to be like. 3.5 hours sounds pretty nice!

Definitely a better route. Don't remember a run in 3.5 hrs, ,but it could be done under 4 hrs. Amtrak required a fireman on the route, so it was scheduled at 4 or more hours running time. Some engineers could squeeze the schedule until it hollered. Date: 02/21/18 16:34 Re: Cardinal is now over 2 hours late just trying to get into Ind Author: reindeerflame A minimum of 3 trains each way is needed: why does nobody get this?

Nowadays it's carded at 4 hours 54 minutes, or 44 minutes longer (and it's often late). Unless the Midwest HSR plans come to fruition (don't hold your breath), I'm very pessimistic about things ever improving. CSX needs to be pressured into treating the HS as a priority move and that's not likely to happen. Also, there's no other feasible route from Dyer into Chicago. I've seen some suggestions about continuing on CN/GTW to Harvey and then taking CN/IC downtown. There is a connection for that at Harvey but it's in poor shape and would require a lot of cash to rebuild. Then too, of all the Class 1 roads, CN is usually considered the most hostile to hosting passenger trains (as their handling of the Illini and Saluki testifies). Toss in the backup move off the SAL to reach CUS and the trip wouldn't be much shorter--if at all--than it is now. And so the HS trudges on and the passengers suffer.....until they realize that the bus is cheaper and faster. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/21/18 19:03 by calumet. I think most anyone in Indy already knows the bus is better. Megabus offers 6 departures that take 3.5 hours for $25 a person. Best Amtrak can do is $33 - $54 and 5 hours leaving at 6am. If you want to leave at a different time your taking a bus somewhere else to get a train like Champaign-Urbana and it costs more and takes even longer.
