Amtrak has clearly stated multiple times that NO Cars will be sold as in the past.....scrap is far more likely.

What a shame.......Too bad people like Brian Rosenwald are not in charge of Amtrak at various levels near and at the top.

"It has been decided that due to safety concerns and the rising cost of maintenance that these cars will be retired and sold."

Now, "sold" doesn't necessarily mean to a private car owner, it could mean to a scrapper, but the announcement does clearly say "sold". Having said that, with no bathrooms or bedrooms, and with high-level vestibules, these cars really aren't much use to a PV owner unless they already have compatible cars that they have plans to do something with. People with money who qualify for that are few and far between. I'd expect a scrapper to offer more attractive bids in an auction.

They would make great stationary night club/bars!
To scrap them would be a real travesty!
I'm sure many museums would be lining up to have a chance to purchase,
that is if the price was right! Corporate giving tax laws probably don't apply to Amtrak.

I don't know when their last run was on a regular long distance Superliner train.
Here is 39971 at Chicago ready to depart on #21 The Eagle on Aug. 22, 1986.
Also, 39975 at Milwaukee pinch hitting for the regular SSL on #8 the Empire Builder in April of 1986.
I'm pretty sure they sat at Beech Grove for a few years before they were rehabbed for PPC service.

I think the most unusual thing they were subjected to was "Dance Floor Car"  on the Reno Fun Train in the mid-80's.  The entire Upper Level was stripped and a plywood dance floor was added.  The stairwell was boarded over to keep dancers more or less safe and cup shelves added along the top of the window line.
Damn, I wish I'd taken pictures of that!

These cars should still have the one small bathroom at the newsstand/bar end of the upper level. That was added so elderly persons in the adjacent Hi-level coach did not have to go down the stairs to use the facilities.

The "drop pipe" might still be there, but I'll bet the hopper is gone.  This washroom was pretty much only used by the crew towards the end, and not enough that it was convereted to a modern holding system.

So fortunate you’re retired, SR—
These last few years are getting tougher w/ all these changes...
As you used to say, “Two words about the RR, Oh well!”

Ha! Yeah- funniest thing you ever said!

The story:
Back in the 80's Mark & I worked on the Coast Starlight.  I was an LSA, Mark was the AC.  Linda Niemann's book BOOMER had come out (a Pun?) and Mark said he was inspired to write his own book about life on Amtrak- only he was going to call it BUMMER.

Yes, that was the decree of Joe "Scorched Earth" Boardman. His intent was
to stop Amtrak equipment from falling into the hands of those who might
become competitors to his evil, autocratic regime. Whether Wick "Short
Timer" Moorman countermanded that edict, or what Richard "New On The Block"
Anderson will do, is not known.
