Guess the Chicago Tribune doesn't care much about Amtrak passengers.

Yet another reason to keep the St Charles airline! We used SCAL back in ‘88 to detour when the bridge was stuck up acct the extreme August heat— IIRC, the bridge was stuck for several days and yard pilots would get on all the MI trains and take them to 16th st tower, then down the IC Iowa line and out to the PRR at 21st. Took awhile but we got in and outta town !

Carbondale trains (& CONL) can and often (usually?) does bypass the bridge by coming around the curve on the BNSF and getting on the St. Charles Air Line.
