Red Sox travel BAL - PHL tomorrow
Author: DavidP

The Boston Red Sox are scheduled to travel from Baltimore to Philadelphia after tomorrow afternoon’s game against the Orioles.  NESN announcer Dave O’Brien mentioned they’ll be going by train.  Does anyone on TO know how Amtrak will handle this move? Special train or seats on a scheduled run?  Inquiring Sox fans want to know!  Thanks.

Dave

Delta Dick most certainly will not run a special train for these guys.  On his railroad, it's his way or the highway.  They will likely ride in a regular coach (or maybe business class) with the rest of the public.

We Yankee fans are hoping that the Red Sox Amtrak train gets stuck in an inaccessible tunnel until October.

50 - 60 people plus their gear. A couple of cars plus a baggage for the equipment.

Would not CSX be the most direct route from Camden Yards to the Philly intermodal yard a couple of blocks from Citizens Bank Park? Is the CSX OCS available?

;-)

Taking the train doesn't sound logical to me:

1) Bus transportation from the hotel to the train station.

2) All the players & personnel then mix with the public at the train station, in order to board their train.

3) All the players & personnel mix with the public upon arrival at their train station.

4) Bus transportation from the train station to their hotel.

Why not simply bus all the players & personnel directly from one hotel to the other hotel?

Why is it a bad thing if the players and the public mix?

Could be a nice promotional event for Amtrak. A nice way to remind folks Amtrak is an alternative.

As a former traveling secretary of a major sport team the players don’t leave the ballpark to the hotel on get out of town days

They pack their bags on these days and most of their personal luggage stays on the bus while the game is played

The team equipment in this case most likely will be packed and trucked to Philly as this takes time and laundry is done after the game for health and safety reasons

There could be upwards of 150 traveling for a baseball team of 25 players

At times we would change up the travel routine half way through the season by request of the manager

The logistics of using alternative modes of transportation are very difficult at times. Our team was sponsored by an airline and part of the deal would have 1 person at that airline be my liaison for all things travel related regarding that airline

Not as easy as it sounds

It was reported the the Cincinnati Reds traveled via Amtrak charter last week after their series in Washington DC and before their series against the New York Mets.

Chartered Amtrak trains are occasionally used by the football Giants, Redskins, etc.

The sports writers have commented favorably on the trips.

How is transport from the hotel or ballpark to the railway station any different than going to the airport? Oh wait. It's closer. The Leafs and Habs have been using VIA Rail for at least one game in Toronto or Montreal for years. VIA always receives good press from the trip.

The Red Sox actually have used Amtrak frequently for games in NY and Baltimore. They have had everything from chartered trains to added cars to traveling on Acela Express.

Your only hope huh?

A proud Red Sox fan!

BA (Before Anderson) Amtrak often ran special moves for sports teams on the NEC, always with a dedicated consist/train. .
Standard consist was a 3 car Amfleet consist: Cafe, Metroliner Coach(60 seat), and Club Car; both cafe and club had an OBS attendant.
I wuld guess this "special move" approach is still true; mixing teams with regular passengers oin a regular train would be difficult, and there is a certain schedule certainty that comes with the knowledge that your very own dedicated train is waiting only for you (the team) in the station.
I rode an number of these specials, particularly football moves (Skins & Ravens).
Players were always well behaved and seemed to self-segregate into three equal sized groups, irrespective of their age/ethnicity:
(1) Sleepers (2) Prayer groups with Bibles (3) Card players, often poker (the chip of choice was a $50 bill, probably more by now).
As noted elsewhere in this thread, baggage always moved separately except for small carryon bagage.  Team management usually traveled in the Club Car, whch in those days had 33 seats.

Toys for Tots was a nice promotional event for Amtrak, too.  Mr. Anderson apparently did not agree.

He must like baseball more than needy children.

I know the Capitals used to take the train to NY when playing the Rangers, not sure if they still do.
