Roots on the Rails on #22 at Austin
Author: Hou74-76

The five private cars shown on the end of #22 today at the Amtrak depot in Austin, TX are part of the "Roots on the Rails" excursion now traveling to points north and west. Crew on board indicated that this was the last run for the Palm Leaf, an old ACF car that ran on the Santa Fe and Amtrak. Nice to see private car movements through Austin still.  I hope I can see more.

The other cars from front to back are: Overland Trail, Silver Spendor, Pacific Sands, Cimarron River. The first three are LA Rail Cars. Besides the Palm Leaf, all the cars face much reduced use in response to Amtrak's March 2018 strict restrictions on private car travel and very high fees for those that remain.

On Santa Fe trains, where I worked, sleeping nights in "Palm" series roomettes was usually a great pleasure.  Quiet restful sleep in comfort.
