Today's Officer Special first snow at Tunnel 29 and No. 5
Author: highgreengraphics

Last night and today was the first snow accumulation of the winter at Tunnel 29 on the ex-Rio Grande Moffat Subdivision, and UP ran a lengthy Officer Special from Denver to Grand Junction, led by UP 1943 and UP 3028 (A recent-vintage Tier 4 SD70ACe). Here it is exiting Tunnel 29 and curving over the bridge spanning South Boulder Creek in snow and fog this morning at 9:10 AM. Amtrak No. 5 was over two hours late into Denver today after losing a lot of time at Ottumwa, IA for some reason. Here it is at the same place but from a much lower vantage point, curving over South Boulder Creek at 12:15 PM after several snow squalls. Climbing the steep rocks to get to the lofty Tunnel 29 vantage point for the Special - and getting back down - was real testy today - the frozen rain overnight had coated everything with a thin layer of ice. === === = === JLH

Snow squall kind of screwed with me in Photo 1 - you can't even hardly see a trace of that bright yellow train on the other side of the tunnel, which usually curves across the top of the view. Within five minutes of the train's passing, the snow had enveloped me and moved on, and the curve on the other side of the tunnel was a clear view. Sheesh! === === = === JLH

After reading your discussion went back to first photo and barely saw the other end. But that was on a 50" monitor with Nvideo Graphics Board. Fantastic photo and certainly looks like a difficult access. Thanks very much should be IOTD.

Great shots!  The best news is that you made it up and down without becoming a victim of the ice and snow!
