Passenger Trains > Amtrak dome car on the Adirondack (10/6)

In addition to the observation car "Hickory Creek" being on the end of train 69, the Adirondack on October 6th, the train also had a dome car added at Albany.  The "Hickory Creek" was a bonus, but the main reason for riding the train up to Port Henry, NY was to ride the dome car.  What a great experience!  It was so cool to be riding in the car and taking in the sights.  While the sky was grey and the foliage barely underway, it was still worth it.  And the car stayed full from when it opened to when my son and I exited as we got ready for our station stop.  In fact, someone was waiting for an open seat as we left.  Full credit goes to my son as this was his idea for the ride.  I am hoping I can do it again next year.  Here are some photos.

Continuing the photos...  There was a park ranger who joined the dome car to give some insights to the area as we rode the rails.  He also stated the foliage has been delayed due to the above normal warm weather in late August and September.

4.   Some color the further north we went.  This was in the area of Whitehall.
5.   One last look of the view from the dome car.
6.   At Port Henry, we bid farewell to the dome car.

It was a great experience and my son and I really enjoyed it.  Hope you enjoy the photos.

Your'e lucky the car was back in service. It hit a low hanging tree on Sept. 23rd and broke the front Dome glass but was repaired and returned to service on the 29th.

I only wish that Amtrak had more dome cars.  This was one of their biggest mistakes when they retired all the domes but this one the "Ocean View," yet look how many of their former domes are privately owned and are operated on special trains with some on Amtrak.  The new view liner cars are OK, but they are not the same as the original dome cars.

It should be noted that riding from Albany to Port Henry will allow a 1 day turn to someone with limited time wanting to ride the dome. I'm going to do it at the end of the month. Just don't try it on Wednesday, as that is the day off for the dome.

Dome cars are all non-revenue space, Amtrak does not sell seats in this car, just like the Sightseer Lounge car. But at least Sightseer Lounge has the snack bar to make a little revenue.

And unless you stop over somewhere you only get a dome car ride one way.  Why not do a round trip to Montreal?

Cause it takes two days and a hotel. For someone with limited time turning at Fort Henry allows a one day turn with dome on one leg.

i was just trying to be helpful.  Not all of us are that busy.
