Amtrak's Acela seats to be upcycled into luxury bags
Progressive Railroading
10/17/2018

> Amtrak has partnered with People for Urban Progress (PUP) to
> repurpose Acela Express seat covers into luxury leather bags.
>
> An Indianapolis-based nonprofit, PUP expects to roll out about 2,500
> bags over the next 10 to 12 months as the seat coverings are
> repurposed. The first products will include tote bags, backpacks and
> "dopp kits" or toiletry bags. PUP designers are hand-crafting all the
> bags.
>
> "One of the main objectives of this upcycling project is to divert as
> much waste from landfills as possible," said Amtrak Senior
> Sustainability Manager Kara Angotti in a press release. "We have set
> a corporate recycling target of 20 percent by 2020 and this project
> will help us advance closer to achieving that goal. This is a unique
> opportunity to explore the extended value in our trash and to focus
> on ensuring we consider what happens to our materials at the end of
> their useful life."
>
> The project marks PUP's first national endeavor and a new initiative
> for Amtrak. The bags will retail from $75 to $750, according to PUP.
>
> Amtrak's Acela Express service operates between Washington, D.C., and
> Boston.

Fake concern about landfill trash and con job on being green.

What about all that is created by dining car non-recyclable disposable dishes (too cheap to pay a human to wash Corelle) and even more from all the crap encasing "Contemporary Dining" meals ?

It's not a "fake concern'. Landfils aren't free. And you folks on the east coast know that from encountering numerous iterations of the "PoPoChoCho.  Recycling makes sense. Just because somethings aren't recyclable doesn't mean that the entire concept is worthless.

News stories like this show how bad the Media has become -- even the rail media

Yes--this is a "Politically Correct" story about recycling-- but not a damn word about the new seats Acela is getting (i.e., more comfortable, same color, etc.)

The story is about the re-purpose of the seat covers, not about the genuine Corinthian Leather that replaces them. So the story is spot on.

Yes, in the same way that having an interest in Bruce Springsteen is "fake" if one is to believe that Chris Christie is more representative of New Jersey guys.

I'm glad someone still remembers Ricardo Montalban's passion for the fine Corintian leather in his Cordoba.  Strange to think that one day soon both Mr. Montalban and Corintian leather will fade from pop-cultural memory . . .

Ricardo who?   And the leather comes from Corinth, MS?  Maybe hauled by the Corinth & Counce SW1001.   (that's a joke for shortline fans of a certain vintage)

Leather, you say. I guess the herds of Naugabeast, which once dotted the Plains prior their wanton slaughter for seat covers and whatnot, can sleep a little easier tonight.

I used to prepare brand new Cordoba's for customers when I was still in school. Made some pretty good money at it too. They were cool cars.
