Passenger Trains > DC: More info on the new Long Bridge projectDate: 12/04/18 12:27 DC: More info on the new Long Bridge project Author: Lackawanna484 The "Long Bridge" spanned the Potomac River between DC and VA, carrying the Pennsylvania Railroad and ts connections into Union Station. It also served as a key link in the national freight network.
A new bridge is proposed, which will have passenger rail, bicycle, and pedestrian capacity. https://dc.curbed.com/2018/12/4/18125915/dc-long-bridge-project-pedestrian-cyclist-access Date: 12/04/18 12:56 Re: DC: More info on the new Long Bridge project Author: andersonb109 Aren't the Hudson River Tunnels in more need of replacement than a new DC bridge? Re: bike lanes. They are cropping up everywhere in Detroit. Some are in areas most would never consider riding a bike through. All they do is take away a much needed lane for vehicle traffic.

Long Bridge replacement carries a vastly different price tag as well. "Only" $1 billion or so. A new ped/bike bridge would be linked to the new-ish Arlington County park called Long Bridge Park. (Nice train-watching spot alongside the RF&P Sub by the way.) The county is building a new $55 million aquatics center there. Our tax dollars at "work." That depends on whether you are looking at the age of the infrastructure, or the traffic on those two river crossings. After all both crossings are over a century old. Nature and entropy have a way of winning the long game. Why not both? And the bridges over the Susquehanna, Bush, Gunpow and the Baltimore tunnels -- just to name a few. . .
