Metra & UP Operation North Pole
Author: kevink

For several years, Metra and the Union Pacific have operated a specially decorated train for the Operation North Pole organization out of Des Plaines, IL. It departs Des Plaines with volunteers aboard and heads to Crystal Lake on the UP Northwest Line. At Crystal Lake, kids with various serious illnesses and their families board the train for the trip back to Des Plaines and a meeting with Santa. Kato USA is also a sponsor and has offered train decorated to match each year's unique train. More information on ONP at: https://www.operationnorthpole.org/about/

Here is this year's train departing the Des Plaines Metra Station:

Nice! I expected an open end observation with Santa waving at the kids!

Are these former CB&Q cars?

Pretty good attempt at Jingle Bells on a locomotive horn!

No. The 6001-6192 coaches were built by Nippon-Sharyo 2002 to 2005
The 8414 - 8478 coach/cab cars were built by Amerail 1995 to 1998.

Excellent source for all Metra locomotives and cars can be found here: http://chicagorailfan.com/rosmetra.html
