Passenger Trains > Amtrak Cancels Saturday Morning River Runner TrainsDate: 01/10/19 14:07 Amtrak Cancels Saturday Morning River Runner Trains Author: MILW16 Amtrak has canceled the morning River Runner trains between St. Louis and Kansas City Saturday morning (Jan 12). We are expecting - ready? - 5-8" of snow Friday evening through Saturday evening in St. Louis. Lesser amounts to the west. Guess those new Siemens locomotives can't handle snow. What a joke.
I guess it is cheaper to not run the trains so cancel them when you can. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/10/19 15:28 by MILW16. Unless this is UP mandated, Amtrak should be ashamed. Wonder if the airlines have given up as well?

I won't be shocked if UP shuts down operations on that sub too. Date: 01/10/19 15:31 Re: Amtrak Cancels Saturday Morning River Runner Trains Author: ClubCar bretton88 Wrote:

I have commented on these problems in my responses before; the railroads no longer have the needed personnel working like they did in the bygone days. Here in the Maryland area I remember when the B&O and the Western Maryland Railway operated trains in all kinds of winter weather as they had station agents (yes even on the WM they had agents) who lived nearby and when it snowed, they were prepared to light the kerosene switch heaters and sweep out the snow around the switches. For the passenger stations there were porters who shoveled the train platforms, there were tower men all along these railroads and it was not uncommon for a tower operator to sweep out snow under switches and light the heaters. The railroads do not have these workers any more to save money. Yes, they save money and no longer provide the services like they used to. Maybe the railroads of the past took pride in being all-weather--and even advertised this as an advantage over air travel--but, I'm sure this is a foreign concept to Amtrak management.
But, it might be possible that today's travelers are different from those of the past -- maybe Amtrak knows that riders cancel their plan en-mass when snow storms are due.. If this is true, Amtrak might be smart to not run practically empty trains through a snow storm. This is the only explanation I can think of. However, at 4pm I received another message that 311 was “no longer cancelled.” However, I don’t want to mess with the storm, so chose to cancel my trip anyway. So, not sure why the quick cancellation and cancellation of the cancellation!

First you complain if Amtrak cancels a train due to a weather forecast. And then you complain even louder if they do decide to run the train and it does get stuck. There's just no way to make you guys happy, is there? Date: 01/10/19 17:41 Re: Amtrak Cancels Saturday Morning River Runner Trains Author: MILW16 Can't book 311 for Saturday - shows sold out.
Just my opinion - 5-8" of snow over a 24 hour period is not going to get any train stuck. Does it stop trains in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana or on Donner Pass? No blizzard conditions so no danger of cuts filling in. The turnouts on the STL-KCY route all have electric or gas heaters that should have to problem keeping up with that rate. Was reading (earlier today) an old NYC ad that bragged on taking the train no matter the snow or sleet conditions on the highways!
If one didn’t know the way it was (or used to be) you could easily get the impression that both Amtrak and the host RRs consider it a liability to run a train in the snow. Like it or not it was done in the past. Posted from iPhone Date: 01/10/19 20:47 Re: Amtrak Cancels Saturday Morning River Runner Trains Author: P TWC Wrote:

And again, it is absolutely pathetic. Actually worse than that. Posted from Android Marty Harrison Knob Noster, MO Date: 01/11/19 12:07 Re: Amtrak Cancels Saturday Morning River Runner Trains Author: joemvcnj So when Train 4 arrives KC on Saturday morning, people connecting for the St Louis train will be left standing around until the evening train, if not for the next morning's train.

The Sedalia Sub is not shutdown!
