New Procedure for No. 28 in Spokane?
Author: bmarti7

I heard the No. 8 engineer, when asked by the BNSF Boyer West DS if they were ready to depart, " will be a few minutes - there's a new procedure where the smoke deflector has to be removed from 28's engine". Can anyone explain the "smoke deflector".

They've had trouble with exhaust fumes getting into cars during tunnel transit.
Often having car attendants temporarily turn off the HVAC systems.
That's about all that comes to mind.
Similar issue in Colorado on the ski train and California Zephyr.

When riding the lounge car of No. 28 one can look forward over the locomotive.  Here is a little video clip from last November.
This is poor photographic composition with the lower half just the locomotive, but fun.
And yes there was a whiff of exhaust in Cape Horn tunnel (between Stevenson and Washougal).
It was a fun trip because I found Kirk Thompson, an avid NP model railroader, ridign there too.

That's a great view forward.  Some interesting noises, though.

Depending on the locomotive, and how good the end door of the car seals, that ride in the lounge on 27 and 28 can be quite fumy. And it doesn't require a tunnel. Glad to hear that is being addressed after all of these years. Wonder how successful they are.
