Man Arrested for jumping aboard Amtrak @ Cantara Loop?
Author: RyanWilkerson

This is an interesting read. How did he jump on a moving Amtrak train near Cantara Loop?
Judging by the time, this would be the southbound Starlight and if they detained this guy near South Old Stage Road near Mott, they wouldn't have passed Cantara Loop yet. Anyone with better details?

"Sheriff’s Office Deputies Arrest Suspect for Obstructing Train Operation
On early Monday morning, February 4, at about 1:18 a.m., Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies and officers from the Mt. Shasta Police Department (MSPD) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a radio-dispatched call of a man causing a disturbance on a moving Amtrak train after the man allegedly jumped on-board the back-up engine while in motion in vicinity of Cantara Loop. The man was reportedly under the influence, was exhibiting hostility, and was not wearing a shirt. He allegedly attempted to manipulate train-related control devices and activated the train whistle on numerous occasions. Train crewmen feared for their safety and did not approach the suspect. He reportedly attempted to place the train in “emergency stop mode” as well, potentially jeopardizing the crew and passengers.
The suspect was eventually detained by a MSPD officer in vicinity of S. Old Stage Road near Mott Road and turned over to a responding SCSO deputy. The suspect, identified as Dylan Thomas Baldini, 26, of McCloud, California, was arrested for being intoxicated in public (unable to care for his own welfare or others), and more importantly, for trespassing on railroad property and interfering and hindering the safe and efficient operation of a locomotive, railway car, or train. He was booked at the Siskiyou County Jail after being examined at a local hospital. The criminal violations are misdemeanors and can result in fines and/or jail sentence in the Siskiyou County Jail.
According to Sheriff Jon Lopey, “We are grateful the prompt response from SCSO, MSPD, and CHP helped to mitigate what could have been a very dangerous outcome on a moving train, which obviously involved actions that potentially jeopardized the safety of passengers, crew, and others in the community. This case is still under investigation and anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office 24-hour Dispatch Center at (530) 841-2900.”

A lot of them repeatedly go to rehab clinics, which are basically houses in nice neighborhoods, or what USED to be nice neighborhoods, after the operators of those establishments bilk the medical insurance companies for all they're worth.  It's a big scam.  They go to these places, dry out, get released and start the cycle anew.

Good Lord Agent, correct me if I'm wrong, but your  understanding of addiction seems to be that it's all a big scam.  If only it were that simple.

Not having a shirt on and exhibiting an unusual physical act, like jumping onto a moving train, usually points to a Meth-induced situation. The muscles are super-fueled and can run faster and jump higher, so to speak. That's the main attraction to the drug, sometimes a cheap way for a person with out much money to keep warm all night in the Canyon ( ie homeless and living in the woods).

Agree the time and the landmarks are mixed up.

Not to worry, they said all charges are just ' misdemeaners'. I bet all the people on the train and the crew are glad they could have given their lives for just a tiny little insignificant law.

I suppose a similar incident will have to result in real damage along with cost to life and property in order for it to not be a misdemeanor.
Common sense doesn't seem to exist within certain arenas.

Yeah, they might be misdemeanors, but given the number of them and I'm willing to bet this is NOT his first time he's been arrested for drunk in public.
So he will probably be getting some time in jail to dry out. You can get up to a year for a misdemeanor crime in California depending on the crime.

And that's "punishment"?  Three hots and a cot when, previously, they may have been living under a freeway overpass and had to resort to dumpster diving?  In Iowa, the prisoners sue when they can't view porn.

Yes, when those imbibing remove their shirts anyone nearby is in for a long night.  Skiers and snowboarders are notorious for such activities and usually scrape their backs when they fall.  Good thing young Dylan didn't get his legs removed or any Amtrak people/LEOs injured chasing the clown.

This will be difficult for an overworked and underfunded disrict atty. (just a guess here) to downplay.  The UP Police or Special Agents most likely will enter the case.  The danger to the public is clear.  The suspect's prior history, if any, will also be considered. Anyway it is likely that the case will recieve diligent prosecution.  Think about the impact on that rural county of all that railroad property tax and  local payroll.

The same info shows up in the Redding TV webpage and the local Mt Shasta news site with a mug photo. If you toss out the comment about Cantara Loop it fits with the Southbound Amtrak and the Mt Shasta PD being the responding Agency, then meeting them at Mott Road, having the best access with an off ramp from I-5. The time fits as well being close to 12:30 or 1 am. (northbound being around 5:30 am).

The Cantara connection may have been someone's 'what if' remark regarding the train going around the tight curve with some sort of out of control situation taking place. But that part didn't happen.

That brings up a question. On the Amtrak P42's, can the brake handle be pinned in the Handle Off position? Can the handle be removed?

I was hanging with a woman for awhile who had a drinking problem.  She was a "functioning alcoholic" and a BIG side benefit was that she was DYN-O-MITE in the bedroom.  Problem was, when I suggested she slack off on the booze, and when she took me up on my suggestion, she then dumped me!  Looking back, I should have just kept quiet and kept her supplied with her favorite brand of vodka!

It was indeed the Starlight that was involved. We certainly weren’t imagining it!

How did he get on in the vicinity of Cantara Loop and end up at Mott Road on the southbound Starlight which comes through there at that time? I believe the article is wrong in stating he got on near Cantara Loop. He would have had to got on near Azalea and then got nailed at Mott Road. Im sure it was the Starlight that was involved just that the Cantara Loop kind of confused things for me.

Judging by his mugshot on local media outlets, I would be surprised if he was not the same man who has been hanging around the Chico Amtrak station the last couple of months, erratic drug-like behavior and bothering my girlfriend and I on a couple occasions around Amtrak time. She and I will go to see the Starlights stop and go once in a while. At one point he acted suicidal as the #11 was knocking down crossing protection just seconds away. On another occasion he was firing shots with an accomplice with maybe a .22 around the station, but we called the cops immediately and left. Sure looked like the same guy anyway. Age description seemed accurate.
